What is a power of attorney?
In general, a power of attorney is a powerful legal document which authorizes an attorney-in-fact (an agent) to conduct a wide variety of legal and financial tasks or duties for the benefit of the person who made the power of attorney. In the context of estate planning, a durable power of attorney can be essential if you become incapacitated. If you become mentally or physically unable to conduct your day-to-day affairs, you will likely need an agent to forward your mail, deposit checks payable to you, pay your bills, or even sell your residence to pay for necessary medical treatment or your continued care.
